AUSTRIAN SOLAR THERMAL TECHNOLOGY FOR AIR CONDITIONING AND HOT WATER PRODUCTION AT UNITED WORLD COLLEGE (UWC) IN SINGAPORE
Singapore is one of the leading countries in embracing new technologies, but utilizing Large Solar Thermal (LST) is much more than trend setting as it provides the client with benefits such as environmental and economical returns.
The recent expansion of a 2nd campus by the United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA) to meet the growing demand from expatriate parents, is designed with a solar thermal system providing air-conditioning (AC) and Domestic Hot Water (DHW) production for the campus. This 76,000 m2 campus with the capacity to house 2,500 students will open in August 2011 with full spectrum of facilities such as music studios, technology workshops, drama spaces, libraries, science labs, sport amenities, canteen, boarding house, etc. and of course a lot of “Green” features.
This new campus, with the help of SOLID LST system, is designed to meet Singapore’s Building Construction Authority (BCA) Greenmark Platinum Certification, which is the highest grade in Singapore’s green building grading system. The to be installed collector’s area of 3,900m2, will generate green energy granted for life time (> 25 years) years approx. 2,200 MWh/year. This LST system at UWCSEA East campus will be largest solar cooling plant in the world, and arguably also the first and only school in the world using a combi (AC +DHW) system powered by renewable energy. These high efficient “Gluatmugl” collectors will be manufactured in Austria by Oekotech, a company affiliated with SOLID Group Austria. The LST system will provide up to 100% of the school’s DHW demand and supplement the conventional chiller system of up to 450 tons (1575 kW) cooling load.
The school’s LST concept, design, installation, optimizing and financial engineering is/will be provided by SOLID International Asia Pte. Ltd. (SIA – registered in Singapore) and SOLID GmbH. Austria (HQ). Coincidently the official signing of the contract for the LST between UWCSEA East and SIA/SOLID took place in the same week as the ground breaking ceremony.
The VIPs who graced the occasion are Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry and Education, Mr. S. Iswaran and the Embassy of Austria represented by Commercial Counselor Mr. G. Meschke and the board of governors of UWCSEA, as well as other high Singapore officials.
