2008 sporting year – with energy from S.O.L.I.D.
Lots of sports fans are looking forward to the 2008 sporting year. In particular, we can anticipate two absolutely huge events this year.
The Summer Olympic Games will take place in Beijing/China from 8th to 24th August. And no less important are the European Football Championships which will be staged in Austria and Switzerland from 7th to 29th June S.O.L.I.D. has a direct connection with both events.
S.O.L.I.D. is proud of the fact that solar technology from Graz will be used at the Summer Olympic Games. Two separate installations will supply the Olympic sailing centre in Qingdao with solar energy. Firstly, a solar installation for solar cooling, providing hot water and assisting with heating has been constructed for the logistics centre. The installation with a collector area of 630 m² started operating in 2006. Alongside this, the sports centre was equipped with a collector area of 666 m² for heating swimming pools, providing hot water and assisting with heating. The installation at the sports centre is particularly impressive thanks to its breathtaking architectural design.
There is also an indirect link between EURO 2008 and S.O.L.I.D. The collectors installed on the roof of the ice rink of Graz’s UPC-Arena (total collector area 1,407 m²) have been feeding around 520 MWh/year into Graz’s district heating grid since 2002. Although the UPC-Arena is not one of the four venues in Austria where matches will be staged, at least a warm-up match for the Austrian national team will be staged in Graz (on 30 May against Malta).
S.O.L.I.D. does of course also construct installations on other scales. At present, a collector area measuring 100.8 m² is being installed in order to provide hot water and assist with the heating at the new sports club building in Feldkirchen near Graz.
